Known as an autoimmune disorder, the celiac disease can occur mostly in people with a genetic predisposition to it. The test for celiac disease it takes not much time and if you want to either you have or not you have to take it. You should get tested for celiac disease as soon as possible if you're worried you might have it.

Regarding a nursing mother's diet affecting the baby, when my daughter was nursing her baby hollered terribly after breast feeding. It wasn't until she stopped eating raw salads that her poor child's pain was relieved. It was also amazing to see her baby's stool look just like the squash soup she ate!

My other daughter had a premie who later had failure to thrive. I suspected that daughter had celiac when she was younger but testing was not done then so I was never able to document it. I have recently discovered I am gluten intolerant and all the pain and inflammation in my body has disappeared since getting off gluten. I am now sharing my good news and recipes with all my daughters. Hopefully, they will incorporate it into their and their children's diets. Thank you for your website, I just found it thanks to HillbillyHousewife.com.

Wow Allison,

I never even considered the ramifications of a gluten intolerant infant and a nursing mom who is eating gluten. Nor have I seen any information done on that. I'll have to see if I can find any research that has been done on it and post that here.

Thank you for that input.

I have a friend who's infant was diagnosed gluten/dairy intolerant as she wasn't gaining weight. She was exclusively breastfeeding. Within just one week of mom being gluten/dairy free the baby who was losing weight gained 5 oz! They didn't do further testing to confirm celiacs, but it seems highly likely.
