I just wanted to bring to your attention, if you haven’t seen this yet or you’re not on Facebook. The Celiac Awareness Tour is coming to a supermarket near you.
You can find their schedule by clicking on the link at the left.
They say that their mission is to hold a series of national events dedicated to providing information for those who live with Celiac disease or know someone who does and generally raising Celiac awareness.
Be sure to check out their schedule so that you don’t miss out. Sounds like some good food, good information, and a good time.
If you’re in the Pittsburgh, PA area, the Celiac Awareness Tour will be in Monroeville, PA,Saturday, January 28, 2012 from 9:00 A.M to 3 P.M. at the Doubletree Hotel 101 Mall Blvd., Monroeville, PA 15146
Mary,
I was wondering if you know if people with type 3 kidney disease can eat gluten free. I am having a hard time finding out any information on whether you can or can not. If you have any information or know where I can get any I would really appreciate it.
Thank you,
CharlieAnn
CharlieAnn,
The only information I could find was basically talk to your doctor or dietitian. I did find a pdf file here http://www.kidney.org/atoz/pdf/nutri_chronic.pdf
I’m not a medical professional, so don’t take anything I say as gospel, but I don’t see why eating gluten free would be harmful to someone with type 3 kidney disease as long as they were eating a well balanced diet and getting all the vitamins and nutrients needed to keep them healthy otherwise.
Thank you once again for your help and advice. I will talk to my dietitian and hopefully can keep at stage 3.
Thank you again,
CharlieAnn

Thanks Judy for that updated schedule.
Just fyi, this group is a JOKE. The Indianapolis IN tour was such a disappointment. They were charging $10 to see approx. 18 vendors????? The room was small and dark. They were handing out samples w/out gloves or any kind of area to wash hands, etc. I actually asked one of the vendors if they had a place to wash hands and they said no other than the bathroom there wasn’t any place. I can’t believe the health dept. didn’t have an issue with this.
On their ads everywhere they put a bunch of logo’s up and we went thinking those companies would be there but they weren’t. It was a lot of false advertising.
There were vendors handing out samples and no place anywhere close to purchase a drink or get water, etc. We listened to one of the speakers (the coupon lady or something) and she was monotone and not very easy to listen to.
If the Celiac Awareness Tour is planning to come back to Indianapolis, I don’t plan to attend and will be sharing our experience with our local groups. It was definitely NOT worth the $10.
Karen,
Sorry to hear you didn’t have a good experience at the Indianapolis Celiac Awareness Tour. I was sick with the flu when they came through Pittsburgh so I didn’t make it there.
I would be interested to hear from anyone else who went to any of the other tours to see if what you experienced was the norm or just a one time thing.
Like you, I would have been pretty grossed out to be handed food samples without the person wearing gloves. Plus I didn’t think there was any kind of a fee to get in. I just assumed that it was free.
If anybody out there went in your town, please let us know about your experience.
Hi, Mary: We love this site and appreciate you getting the word out about our Tour. We’re heading to Philadelphia this weekend, April 28th at Crowne Plaza Valley Forge in King of Prussia, PA. Tickets are available at celiacawarenesstourphilly.eventbrite.com I wanted to get you an updated schedule–we had a date change for Columbus and we’ve added Detroit, so I was hoping you could edit your post for us?

It’s always difficult to read an unhappy comment from someone who attended–because we know most of our gluten-free attendees have a very positive experience. All we can do is continue to work hard to bring together great speakers and chefs, delicious gluten-free products and the gluten-free community for a great day of entertainment, excitement and entertainment!
THANK YOU! Alison
I agree with Karen, I was really disappointed with the Indianapolis Tour also. It is amazing to me that this group advertises all these vendors will be there and than not even 1/5 of what was on the advertising was there.
I won’t waste my time with the Celiac Awareness Tour. It’s obviously about the money and NOT the community. I thought for about 60 seconds about going to Chicago since I’m between Chicago and Indy and can go to both but I’m not wasting another dime. I will be going to Indy on that day because I know their show will be well worth it. I’ll wait for Jen Cafferty’s expo in Chicago and I’ll wait for the local Indy groups Expo on October 13 in Indy.
I can’t believe they are planning their shows in areas that already have great Expo’s. Jen Cafferty does a nice Expo in Chicago each year and the group in Indy has a huge expo with better speakers. I guess the gluten free area is one that is growing enough to make it worth the while to just slop together a show and call it a tour.
I can’t believe your group doesn’t coordinate with other groups so the dates aren’t the same in cities so close together. I would just like us all as a gluten free community to support our local groups who have been so supportive of us, and not a group that just swoops in, advertises something that doesn’t happen and takes our hard earned cash. It’s expensive enough to be gluten free without falling prey to a group that doesn’t deliver what is promised.
I don’t normally comment on public forums but I truly believe that our local groups deserve better from our community and we need to support our local groups since they have been so supportive of us.
Don’t waste $1 to go to this “Tour”. It was terrible and there weren’t hardly any vendors at the Indianapolis location. It was a DARK room NOT dimly lit, small, out in the middle of nowhere and disappointing at best.
It was obvious that this show is all about the money not the community. I will NOT go again. Go to the Indianapolis show in October as Dr. Fasano is coming for FREE. They had a lot of great vendors last year and I am sure Shelia will do it up right again. Don’t waste your money on the Celiac Awareness “Tour”… it’s not a tour it’s not an expo, it’s not a show. I don’t call 18 vendors a show. It was more like an open house without anyone there.
